Description

February is really about love and roses. Join us to learn how to prune your roses to help them flourish—a real act of love. This workshop is an introduction to rose pruning and care from a natural perspective. It is designed to give gardeners of all skill levels a strong foundation to grow roses with confidence. We will learn how to identify the main types of garden roses (i.e. hybrid tea, climbing, etc), then learn how to prune and care for each. We will also touch on ethnobotany of roses and their medicine—including local wild roses—and basic propagation techniques. Students have the opportunity to try out their new pruning skills on a variety of roses with support from the instructor. By the end of the workshop, you will be able to apply your pruning skills to help roses flourish in your garden and beyond. You also may fall in love with roses a little more. Light rose-related refreshments will be provided, as well as rubbing alcohol and rags. WHEN: Sunday, February 26 — 10am-noon COST: $40 - 85 sliding scale (enter your chosen amount as a “donation” on ticket page) To pay with cash and avoid transaction fees, contact [email protected]. If tickets are sold out, contact [email protected] to be added to the wait list. INSTRUCTOR: Katie Vincent LOCATION: This workshop is hosted at the Songaia Cohousing Community’s garden in Bothell. Further logistics for parking and navigating community space will be provided after registration. Songaia is an intergenerational cohousing community with COVID masking agreements in place for shared indoor spaces, such as bathrooms. Participants will be informed of and asked to comply with those agreements while on site. Masks are not required outdoors, but are welcome. We will most likely be outside for the entirety of the workshop. If we get inclement weather, the first part of the workshop may be indoors. PLEASE BRING: a pair of bypass hand pruners garden gloves (ideally leather)a mask (for indoor spaces, and outdoors too if you prefer)water + any snacks for yourselfHOW TO PREPARE: Please come ready to learn and dressed appropriately for the weather. You might bring a notebook to jot down notes, though make sure you can protect it from rain if needed! If standing or kneeling for extended periods of time is challenging, you might bring a kneeling pad or portable chair to sit in while we are pruning. Seating will be available for the first part of class. Why do I have to prune my roses? Roses that get snipped make more flowers and are more resilient to disease. More flowers means more food for pollinators and medicine for people. Locally-grown roses help take a load off of our ecosystems and carbon footprint. And if you’re into herbal remedies, roses are big healers all around the world. There is no more powerful healing than from plants we have built a close relationship with. Pruning is a great way to deepen your connection with roses, receive their medicine, and build flourishing ecosystems. About the teacher: Katie Vincent (they/she) is an ecological garden coach, plant nerd and herbalist based in Duvall, WA. They’ve worked with plants for over 17+ years, most recently as the Garden Supervisor at Bastyr University. Katie specializes in medicinal, edible and PNW native plants, as well as post-wild restoration strategies that incorporate personal healing. In their coaching practice, they support people to become active and soulful stewards of flourishing ecosystems—in their yards and beyond.
