In celebration of Black History Month, California State University Northridge Department of Cinema and Television Arts, in association with Warner Bros., will present a special screening of the award winning 2019 theatrical release Just Mercy , starring Jamie Foxx, Michael B. Jordan, and Brie Larson. Just Mercy is the recipient of four NAACP awards including Outstanding Actor - Jamie Foxx in addition to Best Picture. Synopsis Just Mercy is the powerful true story of Walter McMillian (Foxx), a Black man who was framed for the murder of a girl named Rhonda Morrison and is sentenced to die in 1987, despite evidence proving his innocence. Bryan Stevenson (Jordan), after graduating from Harvard Law School, heads to Alabama to defend McMillian but encounters racism and legal and political maneuverings as he fights tirelessly for McMillian’s life. Q&A The film’s Executive Producer, Mike Drake, a CTVA film alum, along with the film’s director, Destin Daniel Cretton, will discuss the film after the showing. Professor Nate Thomas, Emmy® winner and Head of CTVA’s Film Production Option will moderate. Mike Drake has produced various theatrically released films. He won a Primetime Emmy® and NAACP Image Award for the HBO film Something The Lord Made starring Mos Def and Alan Rickman. He is currently producing Wise Guys for Warner Bros. which is directed by Barry Levinson and stars Robert De Niro. Destin Daniel Cretton has directed numerous films including: Short Term 12, Shang-Chi, and the upcoming Marvel's Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Location The Just Mercy screening will take place Saturday, February 25th at 2pm in the CSUN Alan and Elaine Armer Screening Theater located in Manzanita Hall 100. Admission is free. Seating is limited. Reservations are strongly recommended. A reception will follow the screening. Although not required, masks are strongly recommended.
