Description

To make a small adjustment to a song by Carole King, our music is a “tapestry of rich and royal hue…a wonderous woven magic … a tapestry to feel and see, impossible to hold.” This concert will be a tapestry of something old and something new from many different visions. For this special concert, we will weave together the talents of two conductors. Dr. Stanley Roberts, Director of Choral Studies of Mercer University Townsend School of Music and conductor for the CSMG concerts for many years, is one of the choral conductors. The second hue in the conductor tapestry is Dr. Gary Gerber, new Dean of Mercer University Townsend School of Music. Both have been leading rehearsals teaching both the music and choral technique. Our accompanist is Jonathan A. Poe who has been an important part of the rehearsal and concert tapestry for several years. “The spring concert has two meanings for me,” said Dean Gerber. “It is a mix of old standard choral anthems, such as “Last Words of David” by composer Randall Thompson with new, contemporary choral anthems, including two compositions by Dan Forrest. It is a good mix of standard literature by composers from years gone by, with new, fresh 21st-century works by living composers.” This exciting concert features a wide array of music from Haydn's "Awake the Harp" from "The Creation", and "He, Watching Over Israel" from Mendelssohn's "Elijah" to "Peace in the Valley" (Thomas A. Dorsey), "Ubi Caritas" and "The Music of Living(Dan Forrest), "The Last Words of David" (Randall Thompson), "O Clap Your Hands" (John Rutter), through an amazing assortment of additional artists including Mark Hayes' amazing rendition of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" in a piece called "Swingin' With the Saints".
