Description

According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, North America’s bird population has declined by 2.9 billion in the last 50 years. The most significant cause of the decline is loss of habitat, and there’s an urgency for each of us to become involved to reverse this concerning trend. Kay Charter’s lecture “How to Invite Songbirds to Your Yard,” presented by the Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation, will offer tips on creating habitat in your own yard to help songbirds thrive. Each attendee will be provided educational packets containing the book What the Robin Knows: How Birds Reveal the Secrets of the Natural World by award-winning naturalist and author Jon Young, a list of songbird-friendly plants native to the San Diego region, and additional resources to support your efforts in helping to grow the songbird population. About the Speaker In 1992, Kay Charter and her late husband, Jim, realized that many of their favorite bird species were in decline. Unwilling to stand by and watch the downward slide of these beautiful creatures, the Charters opted to take action by selling their lakefront home in order to purchase a 47-acre tract of land to create a safe haven for the feathered jewels they loved. In 2002, Kay Charter founded Saving Birds Thru Habitat (SBTH), a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the public about the challenges facing birds and pollinators, and providing information on how everyday citizens can help. Kay Charter serves as the Executive Director of SBTH. Photo: Mission Trails volunteer Mark Foreman
