Eli's Fight Night: The battle against ALS 6 months ago, Eli Triantafilis was a healthy, vibrant man entering his golden years. Today, he's fighting a disease called Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, better known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks the nervous system, leading to loss of muscle control and ultimately, paralysis. It affects basic tasks like walking, speaking, eating and more. While some ALS patients see a slower decline over the course of several years, Eli's symptoms have rapidly progressed at a devastating rate. As a result, he is in need of full time, in-home care. ALS is a very rare disease that affects around 16,000 people per year in the United States. There is currently no cure, and the cost of treatment and care can be overwhelming for those affected and their families. Donations will be used primarily to hire a caretaker to help improve Eli's quality of day-to-day life in addition to the ongoing expenses that will continue to occur. Eli’s incredible work ethic and dedication can be traced to his parents who immigrated from Achladokampos, Greece where many close and extended family members remain today. Retired now, Eli had a long and successful career as Master Mechanic for Shirey Cadillac in Oak Lawn. He is known for always willing to go the extra mile, and never said 'no' to working nights or weekends to make sure his friends (and their friends) were with a running auto. He is the kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back, if you were in need. But, it is Eli who is in need, and we hope you'll find it in your heart to help us support our brother.
