In this class participants will learn how to binding a book using the Secret Belgian binding structure created by Anne Goy. However, in this class students will learn how to create a modern and stylish soft cover out of sturdy heavy weight cover paper, which produces a more intact book. Topics Covered: 1. paper grain 2. proper paper cutting techniques 3. where to procure materials for at home projects 4. pros and cons of the binding and when you might use it Materials SPPC will provide paper for the inner pages (standard copy paper), the soft cover paper (handmade Morgan Paper), linen sewing thread, bookbinding needles, cutting mats, bone folders and exacto knives. However, participants are welcome to bring their own supplies for experimentation or for their inner pages, though the price for the class will remain the same. Should participants decide to bring their own inner paper, such as watercolor paper, these sheets MUST BE PRECUT to the following dimensions: 8.5"x11" grain short. Please contact the instructor for further information on bringing your own materials. About the Instructor Mel Antuna Hewitt is a BIPOC book artist residing in Spokane Valley, Washington with her husband and two children. As a diploma student in Fine Binding at The American Academy of Bookbinding she studies with master bookbinders from all over the United States. While her studies at the Academy have been geared towards typical book structues she finds great joy in pushing the boundaries of what constitutes a book in her multifunctional artist books. Mel has been on the board of the Northwest Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers and has recently co-found the Inland Northwest Book Arts Society.
