Come see the film and then go visit the actual Bok Kai Temple used as an inspiration for the film. • SAT. FEB 25 - 8:30 PM - As a new Disney Pixar film to focus on Chinese American characters and cultural themes, and also to be uniquely produced by an all Asian female creative team, as an animated film, is "Turning Red," only for children? This encore screening will be followed by an open forum and discussion with Anna Eng, a researcher of 19th & 20thC Chinese American/Asian American and Women & Gender Studies and lecturer at UC Berkeley and SF State, to look at the feminist, gendered and mother/daughter themes of this coming-of-age film. Reminiscent of the classics of Joy Luck Club, Women Warrior, Eng challenges us to consider how do these themes speak to older generations as well, while tapping into the concerns of new young audiences.• SUN.
