Description

Learn how to plan for a variety of outdoor adventures, from one-day outings to extended months-long adventures. We will cover topics such as equipment, food prep and planning, and trip planning for adventures on skis, in a paddle-powered boat, by bike, and on foot. The class will be geared somewhat to the participants. Depending on participants' interests, the instructor will cover topics like hiking with young children, hiking a long (thousands of miles) trail, winter camping, desert or high-altitude hiking, river and lake paddling trips, and bike camping. The instructor will also offer advice on how to chose the best gear for your needs for different outings, how to dehydrate food, and how to set up mail drops for extended trips. Professor(s) or Facilitator(s): Mary Anderson Mary says, "Nature has saved my life." She has been adventuring outdoors since childhood. She has backpacked more than 16,000 miles and taken numerous long paddling and bicycle trips, including paddling the Connecticut River source to sea and biking to all 251 cities and towns in VT in 32 days on her ebike. She has skied the entire Catamount Trail in sections and has done a lot of winter camping, including a through-hike of the Appalachian Trail in winter. Mary has also hiked the Pacific Crest Trail and Continental Divide Trail, among others. She also did a lot of hiking with her son when he was young. He was the youngest person to finish all the 4,000-foot peaks in the Northeast; when he was ten, they traveled to all of the lower 48 states to climb as many state high points as they could, and got 44 done on that trip. Mary wants to share this love with others and inspire them to go for it, if it's something they have dreamed of. At 65 years of age, Mary has gleaned a lot of knowledge about how to survive and have fun during outdoor adventures, and she'd love to pass the information on.
