Using native plants in our yards to attract and support pollinators, birds, and other wildlife is the first step individuals can take to mitigate the rapid changes taking place in our ecosystem.
As Doug Tallamy--noted entomologist, ecologist and conservationist--says,
“We are at a critical point of losing so many species from local ecosystems that their ability to produce the oxygen, clean water, flood control, pollination, pest control, carbon storage, etc., that is, the ecosystem services that sustain us, will become seriously compromised.”
Since 83% of the land in the U.S. is privately owned, small efforts by many people can make a big difference. If everyone planted natives on just 50% of private land, we would restore biodiversity. The Beaverdam Valley Neighborhood includes 2500 parcels of land! Think of the difference we can make.
Come hear Nathan Buchanan, owner of Wildbud Natives, talk about gardening with native plants to learn what is native in Western North Carolina and how to use native plants where you live.
You'll leave with resources you can use to start introducing native plants into your home landscape.
Nathan's talks often sell out, so this is a special opportunity for Beaverdam Valley residents. All are welcome (yes, even your friends from other neighborhoods)!!
About Speaker: Nathan Buchanan is a WNC native who found a love for native plants and ecology while growing up in Mitchell. Located in the Shelton Laurel Community of Madison County, his nursery Wildbud Natives is a conservation nursery growing native perennials, grasses, trees, shrubs, and seeds for conservation and restoration applications. Wildbud Natives uses local WNC genotype propagation material as frequently as possible.
