She grew up in Haiti where she was exposed to and studied under many of the renowned masters of Haiti’s cultural and artistic scene. After receiving a degree in Music Therapy from Loyola University in New Orleans Riva began a dynamic career that includes work as an author, a visual artist and jewelry maker, a musician, and dancer. Her work creates connections that not only honors Haitian traditions, but presents them as relevant today. She is the author of a creole children’s book, illustrated by Haitian artist, set in the town of Jacmel, entitled ‘Anaëlle ak Lasirèn,’ published in 2015. Her Altar Art and Wearable Altar projects position these customs as necessary practices for contemporary living. Altar Art consists of custom pieces, such as sequined sigil paintings, carved candles, and curated altar boxes, created to use in one's spiritual practice, inspired by Vodou. Wearable Altar includes handmade jewelry and accessories inspired by African Spirituality and Haitian deities. Riva conducted several teaching artist programs with Haiti Cultural Exchange teaching Haitian dance, traditional song, visual arts, and storytelling to elementary students and senior citizens. A solo artist and lead singer of the band Bohio Music- she is widely known throughout Haïti and its diaspora for her unique fusion of Haïtian music with African roots, Soul, and Jazz. As the director of Tout Se Pa she offers dance education around the world. Riva’s practice is about elevating and preserving Caribbean culture, promoting wellness, facilitating healing, and offering ways to engage spirituality through her music and dance therapy. Bohio Music has been hosting Haitian cultural events with various spiritual themes over the years. Fèt Gede, celebrating day of the dead, incorporating foods, colors, rhythms, dance and songs all specific to those particular spirits. They’ve also hosted Fèt Kouzen to honor agriculture and work and Fèt Èzili, honoring various Haitian dieties.
