Black People Don't Do That is an emotive Stoke film series created by Kenny X Hamlett that aims to challenge societal perceptions of Black men. Through this new category of film, the audience will be exposed to stories of Black people processing real and raw emotions while participating in outdoor activities. This series will give viewers the opportunity to experience a deeper understanding of the emotions and challenges Black men face through their own words.
This short film series focuses on three characters: Kenny X Hamlett dealing with depression, Elijah looking to build his community, and Adam processing grief all while partaking in various outdoor recreation activities. Through this series, viewers will follow each individual as they embark on their unique journey of overcoming adversity while creating something positive out of their struggles.
Each subject faces unique struggles that many Black people have experienced in their lives but are rarely seen in media — making this series all the more meaningful and personal. The audience is given an intimate look at their journeys, which contains moments of joy and laughter as well as sadness and grief. By showing these stories in such a visual way, it gives Black people a platform to express themselves without judgment or fear; it also provides others with the opportunity to gain insight into the lives and experiences of those who have been systemically oppressed for centuries.
Black People Don't Do That serves as both an entertainment vehicle for viewers and an outlet for its subjects to tell powerful stories about their lives. Ultimately, Black People Don't Do That aims to educate its audience while also inspiring viewers to explore new possibilities outside their traditional conceptions of self-expression and identity formation.
