Beekeeping is a rewarding hobby that offers a variety of benefits, from the enjoyment of working with these fascinating and important insects to the production of delicious honey. This class will provide an introduction to the basics of backyard beekeeping and the necessary skills and knowledge to successfully manage a hive. The objectives of this class are to provide students with the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to manage and maintain a successful beekeeping venture. Specifically, the class will cover the following topics: • Introduction to the life cycle of the honeybee • Basic equipment and supplies needed for beekeeping • Hive set-up and maintenance • How to inspect and manage a colony • Harvesting honey and other hive products • Bee pest control and prevention • Basic bee health This class will use a combination of lectures and hands-on demonstrations. I will share information about books, beekeeping clubs and organizations, local and national resources, and the offering of working alongside myself, a Vermont Certified Beekeeper. Professor(s) or Facilitator(s): James Key, Farmer James' Apiculture and Honey James is a Vermont Certified beekeeper, a Member of the Vermont Beekeepers Association, a Member of the Board of Directors of the V.B.A., on the Advisory Board of Directors of the V.B.A., and the Vermont Beekeepers Certification group. James has been beekeeping since 2017. Session Type: Class Restrictions or Requirements: This class is designed for beginner beekeepers, as well as those who have some experience with beekeeping but would like to further develop their skills. Accessibility: The White River Valley School is ADA Accessible. Accessible parking and entrance are located near the Middle School and Bethel Elementary entrances.
