Description
Celebrated garden designer John McEllen is one of the most preeminent horticulture and garden design experts in the south. His work spans over 50 years and includes some of the most iconic gardens in our area such as the Georgia Coastal Botanical Gardens, Wormsloe Plantation, and the Fragrant Garden for the Blind in Forsyth Park. John planned Ships of the Sea’s gardens with the goal of creating the most inviting setting in downtown Savannah. Through careful planning and sensitive plant selection both the Scarbrough Garden and North Garden have become an oasis; a place to rest and reflect as well as an excellent display of history. With two floral-inspired cocktails, join John as he journeys through the gardens and explains the flora, fauna, and intentions behind these inspired settings. About John: John McEllen has a wealth of experience in horticulture, landscape design, installation and maintenance. After receiving a degree in history from the University of Georgia and continuing graduate studies in historic landscape from the University of Connecticut, John worked throughout the South in Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia. John’s experience includes work at Georgia Coastal Botanical Gardens and Historic Bamboo Farm, Davenport House Museum Garden, Green-Meldrim House Garden and St. John’s Episcopal Church, The Round House Museum Garden, Harper Fowlkes Garden, Fragrant Garden for the Blind in Forsyth Park, Chatham County Public Library, as well as Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum. In 2012, John was instrumental in the design and installation of the North Garden at Ships of the Sea. He has also done pro-bono service for “Veterans’ Tiny House Project,” Colonial Dames, and “Parker House Single Woman’s Shelter” for Union Mission. This event is free and open to the public.
