Description
In a time filled with violence, injustice, and sorrow, we need artists. Creatives in our midst call us to be attentive to overlooked places of God’s activity. Visual artists help us see the world in new ways, poets give us words to help us express our deep-felt cries; both pointing us to the God who has spoken and is speaking. Join us for a night of visual art and poetry featuring Lo Alaman, Stephen Proctor, and others as we look and listen for signs of God’s work in turbulent times. Hosted by Seattle Pacific University School of Theology and Fuller Seminary's Brehm Center. LO ALAMAN COMMUNITY LIFE DIRECTOR, THE WOODLANDS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Lo Alaman is an artist, author, and speaker from Columbia Mississippi. As a minister and creative, he seeks to encourage listeners to accept the grace the invites them to be who they are, while inspiring them with the grace that invites them to be who God calls them to be. Lo currently serves as a minister at Harvest TWUMC. Easily his coolest distinctions are being Erika’s husband and Emmy’s dad. STEPHEN PROCTOR VISUAL ARTIST Stephen Proctor is a visual artist who specializes in curating immersive experiences with projection. His work has mostly been expressed in Christian settings over the past two decades and has worked with names like Gungor/The Liturgists, The Brilliance, Makoto Fujimura, Ann Voskamp, & Beth Moore. No matter the setting or the theological context, Stephen’s passion is to illuminate imaginative spaces that awaken a sense of awe & wonder in everyone, no matter their beliefs. In recent years, Stephen has shifted his art-form to include landscape cinematography that he films with drones. Bringing an aerial perspective into his live experiences has become an aesthetic that marks his work in a unique way, especially as the beauty of Creation is such a powerful expression of the way of Christ. Stephen lives in the Columbia River Gorge, just outside of Portland, & is a member of All Souls Anglican Church, where zero technology or production is used, other than a few microphones; this provides a much-needed balance & welcomed contrast to Stephen’s art & work, which heavily relies on technology. SPENCER AUBREY VOCALS/POETRY/DJ Spencer serves as a creative storyteller for a resiliency arts project in North Carolina. He is a poet, DJ, and mentor to other creatives. LANCE KAGEY As an artist Lance Kagey has gained a reputation for being a passionate catalyst for community engagement. He has a deep passion for the role art — and specifically Tacoma’s Artisan Movement — can play in the quality of life and depth of conversation that it nurtures. Lance has spent years exploring an antiquated artform called letterpress, using old wood and lead type on a handcrank printing press. Lance Kagey walks the fine line between pragmatic solutions-oriented designer and wild-eyed artist with glorious aspirations. Both can lead to dynamic transformation. He is passionate about the inclusive call of art to create gracious space that invites people of all types to enter into dialog. Lance is a community stirrer-upper. He is, most notably, the cofounder, with Tom Llewellyn, of the wildly successful guerrilla art project, Beautiful Angle — which has been going now for over 20 years.
