Learn how to avoid or correct some typical mistakes made during house and garage construction. Also, what to look for when you're shopping for a home. Bill will use a PowerPoint presentation to show various home-construction phases where mistakes are commonly made. Areas addressed will include: site preparation and septic problems; foundations and quality concrete work; floors, rafters, and truss-sizing rules of thumb; roofing and flashing problems; chimney construction; and more. Students may share their stories of construction mistakes. The course may also include some elementary blueprint reading of plans and specifications that make it easier to communicate quality construction practices. Professor(s) or Facilitator(s): William Rice Bill has worked in residential design, carpentry, and barn repair; was an on-site construction engineer on large commercial and institutional building projects in Boston and New York; has taught construction-related courses at Vermont Technical College; and had a home-inspection business. Bill enjoys the interactions that teaching and learning provide.
