Description

For the past 16 years, Iowa Safe Schools has worked in the Iowa legislature to pass important legislation supporting LGBTQ youth and fighting back against efforts to take away protections. With the help of students, the Iowa Legislature passed our state's anti-bullying law and extended civil rights to include sexual orientation and gender identity. Each year we invite high school students from across the state of Iowa to us for Student Day at the Capitol. Does public policy and advocacy work feel intimidating? No worries! We'll start the day off learning about the following topics: - The current issues affecting the LGBTQ community - Creating strong messaging around a political issue - Sharing your lived experience to create change and make a difference - Navigating advocacy work with folks who might not agree with you You'll have the chance to plan out your messaging and ask the experts any questions about the process. We will walk up to the Capitol building as a large group!
