The Cal Poly Pomona Office of Interdisciplinary Ethnic Studies Teaching and Scholarship (OIES) invites you to our inaugural symposium titled, "Teaching Ethnic Studies in Higher Education." We will be joined by Dr. Christine Sleeter, Professor Emerita in the College of Education at CSU Monterey Bay, a key leader and advocate for ethnic studies. Her publications include Transformative Ethnic Studies in Schools, co-authored with Dr. Miguel Zavala, that situates Ethnic Studies within anti-racist movements to decolonize schooling. We will also learn from Dr. Dolores Delgado Bernal, Professor at Loyola Marymount Universty, Dr. Donna J. Nicol, Professor at CSU Dominguez Hills, Dr. Dolores Calderon,Professor at Western Washington University, Dr. Daniel Soodjinda, Profesor at CSU, Stanislaus, Dr. Tiffani Marie, Professor at San José State University, Gente Organizada, a community based Organization at Pomona, CA, Dr. Shayda Kafai, Professor at CPP and CPP's OIES Co-Directors, Dr. José M. Aguilar-Hernández and Dr. Anthony Ocampo. The symposium will include panels and discussions that explore: What is Ethnic Studies? What is Ethnic Studies pedagogy? What are strategies for higher education faculty and lecturers who are teaching Area F courses? What is the future of Ethnic Studies? The event is open to Cal Poly Pomona students, faculty, lecturers, leadership, and community members. Register today! The event will take place in-person.
