Description

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Pi Omega Zeta Chapter is proud to host a community discussion on the CROWN ACT at Abundant Life Church in Pflugerville on February 21, 2023 from 6:00-8:00 pm. The CROWN (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) Act is a law that prohibits discrimination based on hairstyles associated with race, such as afros, braids, twists, and locks. The Act was recently passed in Austin, TX as a result from local organization’s, Measure advocated for the ordinance. Texas Rep. Rhetta Andrews Bowers (D-Garland, District 113), is once again taking on the issue of hair discrimination as well and recently reintroduced the law as HB 567. According to a 2019 study conducted by Dove CROWN Research Study, a quantitative study with 2000 Black and White women, illuminated the impact of workplace hair discrimination: • Black women are 80% more likely to change their natural hair to meet social norms or expectations at work. • Black women are 1.5 times more likely to be sent home from work, or know of a Black woman sent home, because of her hair. "The CROWN Act is a critical step forward in our nation's progress towards true racial equity and justice. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority is the perfect partner to work alongside to get this passed in Pflugerville. No one should be discriminated against because of their natural hair or cultural hairstyles," says Angel Carroll, Director of Community Engagement & Partnership at Measure. This important discussion aims to educate the community on the importance of the CROWN Act in protecting Black hair in Pflugerville, TX. During the panel discussion, they will explore the history of discrimination against individuals with natural hairstyles, the current legal landscape in the United States, and the cultural implications of this law. The discussion will feature a panel of community leaders, local hair professionals, and experts on the CROWN Act. It is free and open to the public, and we encourage everyone in the Pflugerville community to attend.
