Unity Temple on the Plaza is the place, March 19 th at 4pm, for A Tribute To Black Composers. The show, created for the 2022 Sunflower Music Festival, is a history of Black songwriting and publishing in the 20th century.
The 90 minute concert highlights the music of Maceo Pinkard, Jay McShann, Buck Clayton, Louis Jordan, Duke Ellington, Mamie Watts, Ben Kynard, Nat Adderley, Frank Foster, Charlie Parker, Ahmad Alaadeen, Hank Mobley, Joe Sample, Gamble & Huff, George V Johnson, Bobby Watson, and poet Glenn North.
Also featured are 21st century compositions by members of the cast, trombonist Jason Goudeau, and vocalist Angela Hagenbach. This production is upbeat. Non-stop.
The 19 piece City Light Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of pianist Angela Ward, is full of sensational soloists. The 3 vocalists tell the story of the noted composers and plan to swing the audience through 100 years of music and special guests in a scant 90 minutes.
