Whether you’re in the mood to listen, dance or just have a great afternoon with friends or your sweetheart, plan to be at the Riverside for an afternoon of fun. The afternoon is sponsored by Bellevue Family Dentistry. The concert is free, but donations will be accepted at the door. The venue will be table seating and The Riverside Ballroom bar will be open. The AVB Big Band has been looking forward to this concert ever since its first appearance at the Riverside Ballroom in February 2022. The lively atmosphere of the Riverside was a big hit, said Mike Ajango, director of the AVB Community Band, who will also take the baton for the Big Band concert. “People had a great time last year, and I'm sure that this year will be equally fun for all of us,” he reminisced. “There’s plenty of opportunity at the concert for folks to get together with a group of friends, enjoy some conversation, dance or listen, all in the great historic setting of the Riverside Ballroom,” he said. The Riverside Ballroom concert is part of the 2022-2023 41th concert season for the AVB Community Band (formerly known as the Allouez Village Band). Remaining dates are Mondays, March 20, April 17 and May 15, all at 7 p.m. at the Ashwaubenon Performing Arts Center. (Doors there open at 6 p.m. and donations are accepted following those concerts.) April Strom-Johnson, popular local vocalist known for her signature smooth style that makes everything special, from ballads to swing, will also be making her return to the Riverside Ballroom along with the AVB Big Band. Some of the afternoon’s selections include “Sir Duke,” “Come Fly With Me,” “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore,” “Sing, Sing, Sing,” “Misty,” “All or Nothing at All,” “Mambo Swing,” “Route 66” and “Fly Me to the Moon.” The rest of the AVB Big Band’s selections – you’ll have to come down to the Riverside Ballroom on Sunday, Feb. 19, to find out what they will be! The members of the AVB Big Band directed by Mike Ajango are: Cindy Swain and Kelly Beno, alto sax; Gary Hassel and Steve Waugus, tenor sax; Chuck Larscheid, bari sax; Jerry Chenot, bass trombone; Joe Wingerter, Dick Nocenti and Linda Kelley, trombone; Gene Burmeister, Brent Hussin, Tim Bader, Mike Cegelski and Chris Forbes, trumpets; Glen Niessner and Thomas Killian, drums; Angela Stiles, mallets; Jerry Kruse, auxiliary percussion; Paul Oleksy, piano; Russ Nau, guitar; and Josh Patchak, bass.
