Description

The Staples Lecture Series was created by colleagues and family of Dr. Charlie Staples to honor his contributions to the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Florida. Charlie was a devoted mentor to colleagues and graduate students. Staples Lecture Speaker: Dr. KlasingDr. Klasing will be speaking about The nutritional costs of immunity for growth: “A comparison of estimates based on what the animal tells us versus what we think we know” Dr. Kirk Klasing is an Emeritus Professor of Comparative Animal Nutrition and Avian Sciences in the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Klasing received his B.Sc. (1977) and M.Sc. (1979) degrees from Purdue University and the Ph.D. degree in Nutritional Biochemistry from Cornell University (1982). Dr. Klasing spent 4 years as an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois before joining the faculty at the University of California, Davis. During his time at Illinois, his laboratory was located next to Fahey’s and got to know Dr. Staples. Dr. Klasing’s research is integrative and examines interactions between nutrition and the immune system, including the effect of diet on immunocompetence, the nutritional costs of immune defenses, and the effect of an immune response on growth-related physiology. Dr. Klasing has authored more than 200 scientific peer-reviewed manuscripts in the areas of nutrition, immunology, and biochemistry with a focus on poultry nutrition. He is most proud of having mentored 46 M.Sc. and Ph.D. students that were enrolled in either the graduate program of Nutrition, Immunology, or Animal Biology. He was a member of the Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources with the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (2006–2014), section editor of the Journal of Nutrition, Developmental and Comparative Immunology, Poultry Science, and the Journal of Ornithology and is a past-president of the Comparative Nutrition Society (2005-2006). This lecture will take place at the VAB Auditorium College of Veterinary Medicine.
