Day 1 (3/29/23): Hazardous Materials and the IFC In this course, participants will learn how to identify different types of hazardous materials, how the International Fire Code establishes maximum allowable quantities based on storage, use in a closed system, and use in an open system, and understanding the different footnotes in the IFC tables. Important terms such as maximum allowable quantity, control area, and the difference between storage and use in a closed system vs. open system will also be discussed. Day 2 (3/30/23): NFPA 13R Installation Requirements (3.5 Hours) This course will discuss the differences between NFPA 13, 13R and 13D, when NFPA 13R can (and cannot) be used, the International Building Code requirements related to NFPA 13R, along with changes that have taken place between the 2015 edition and 2024 edition, and specific installation criteria outlined in NFPA 13R on where sprinklers are required or may be omitted. Integrating Fire Alarm and Sprinkler Systems (3.5 Hours) There are several situations where NFPA 72 and NFPA 13 refer to each other for certain fire protection requirements. This course will outline the different fire protection requirements between NFPA 72 and NFPA 13. Topics to be discussed include: Waterflow and supervision requirements, dedicated function fire alarm systems and occupant notification in the IBC/IFC, and compliant vs. non-compliant methods for transmitting the fire alarm and waterflow signals from the protected premises to the supervising station. This course will follow the NFPA 13R class in the morning and will provide attendees with scenarios for coordinating and integrating fire alarm and fire sprinkler systems in residential occupancies.
