Description

Join us on Saturday, Feb 18th, from 2-4pm, as we welcome photographer, Messay Shoakena, for an artist talk and demonstration of his photographic practice. Based in Washington, D.C., Messay Shoakena is a photographer who grew up in Ethiopia, Madagascar, Kenya, Cameroon, and the United States. Through his travels to various countries, he has developed a strong appreciation of different cultures and their beauty which he shares through his street photography work. His Instagram His Website Read his artist statement: My street photography work focuses mainly on the contrast between light and shadow. I am driven to create images where the symphony of colors, people, shadows, and lines work together to show a semblance of order in highly congested and, at times, chaotic city environments. I’m also drawn to capture the unexpected, such as a sudden gesture or a chance encounter, that can add a sense of surprise and spontaneity to the image. Street photography is a way for me to document and explore the world around me, and the fleeting moments of life are what make the work personally rewarding.  They allow me to see the world from a different perspective, in “slow motion,” with all its complexity and humanity of the moment. Medium of work: Digital for street photography work and analog 35mm and 120 C-41 Color Film, both home and lab developed.
