Chiku Awali’s goal is to annually produce an African craft workshop, which bolsters the creativity and self-efficacy of members of its community. The "Dance of the Marionette" project is its 2023 African craft workshop. The project includes constructing the marionettes with papier mache, clay, and wire. In honor of Black History Month, artist Sie Lazare Pale will help participants design and construct their marionettes in guided workshops. Marionettes will be completed by the end of March. From April to June 2023, Chiku Awali marionette makers will learn to operate them and commence rehearsals for an upcoming performance. At the annual Chiku AwaliDance Extravaganza, participants who have made marionettes will put on a short play.
