Description

Join us for this rare opportunity to appreciate the Landcraft Garden and greenhouses in winter. We are pleased to welcome back Vincent A. Simeone (Director of Planting Fields Arboretum, horticulturist, lecturer, and author), who will lead guests on a delightful outdoor exploration of the garden’s 4-cultivated acres. Although most plants lie dormant, interesting characteristics such as habit, ornamental fruit, and interesting bark become most evident in the bare winter landscape. Conifers and broadleaf evergreens offer striking contrasts to deciduous trees and shrubs with their unique needle forms or leaves and prolong a garden’s appeal into the off-season. Simeone will inspire gardeners to utilize unusual horticultural treasures such as winter fruiting plants; uncommon broadleaved evergreens and conifers; deciduous trees baring vibrant barks and branching structures; and flowering shrubs that bloom on the fringes of the winter season. He will offer important information on sound garden maintenance practices and a plant palette that will provide food and shelter for animals in winter. Then warm-up with Dennis Schrader, President of Landcraft Garden Foundation and Founder & Owner of Landcraft Environments – as he pulls guests inside for a tour of Landcraft’s exceptionally diverse plant collections within the warm & lively greenhouses of Landcraft Environments. *Participants will receive a signed copy of Simeone’s book, “Sustainable Gardening: Grow a Greener, Low Maintenance Landscape with Less Resources” OR “Wonders of the Winter Landscape.” **Continuing Education Units (CEUs) available! 3 credits each for International Society of Arboriculture Certified Professionals; Certified Nursery and Landscape Professionals; and NYS Registered Landscape Architects through Cornell Cooperative Extension Suffolk County. Sign-up sheets are available from each provider day of event.
