Description

What is a radio play? This dynamic style of audio performance for the digital age hearkens back to the days when entertainment for the masses was conveyed almost entirely by radio. In a world of informational and conversational podcasts, radio dramas seek to bring theater back into this sphere, from soap operas to dramatic stories in the style of The War of the Worlds. Many historical radio plays seek to blend fact and fiction, creating an exciting new way to connect with the past. Go back in time to the streets of 1835 New York City with James Scully, the co-creator of Burning Gotham, the new audio soap opera about the fastest growing city in the world and the opportunists who shaped it. Hear for yourself what a modern radio play can sound like, learn about the research and development process behind Burning Gotham with its creator, and find out how one develops an audio soap opera in 2023. Creator, director, and actor James Scully is an outgoing native New Yorker who grew up in a home with three generations of family. He had close relationships with both his grandparents and great-grandparents, being exposed to an invaluable amount of local culture. A graduate of Xavier High School in Manhattan and Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, James has spent over a decade working for media companies such as Conde Nast and Hearst. He produces/hosts Breaking Walls, the docu-podcast on the history of American network radio broadcasting. He also writes/directs/post-produces/acts in scripted audio fiction productions besides Burning Gotham, like the western series Frontier Gentleman, and the Frank Sinatra Musical biopic And Then I Sing. James is also an actor in an audio theater troupe in NYC called The Fireside Mystery Theatre. This event is presented by Lexington Historical Society.
