Luxor Nursing and Rehab at Sayville on How to Improve Balance in 10 Minutes Per Day Working on our balance is such a vital part of our fitness and wellbeing as we age. Losing balance skills results in an increased risk of falls, which can then lead to a host of other health problems, including death. Working on balance along with strength and flexibility training is the key to staying upright as you get into your more advanced years. And it doesn't take long to keep your balance at its best. Luxor Nursing and Rehab at Sayville has a look at four balance exercises that will only take 10 minutes out of your day to perform. 1. Toe Tap Start this exercise by standing and having one hand on a wall. Begin with both legs straight, then life one leg and stretch it in front of the other leg until its at a 45-degree angle to the rest of your body. Touch your toes to the ground, hold it for a couple of beats, the return to the start position. Do eight reps with each leg two times. 2. Knee Bends/Heel Raises Start here too standing with one hand on a wall. Start with your feet together and torso straight, then bend your knees. When you straighten back up, lift your heels off the floor and raise your other arm like you're trying to ask a question in class. Also perform two sets of eight reps here. 3. Toes Up For this exercise, start by lying on your back with your hands under your hips. Lift your legs straight in the air as much as you can, then raise your hips slightly off the ground. Hold for a count of two, relax your hips back to the ground and do eight reps for one set. Try to do two to four sets. 4. Arabesque Start on your hands and knees, using a pillow under your knees if you need to. Then lift your right leg straight back with your toes pointed in the air. Don't arch your back—keep your leg and back in a straight line while using your abdomen muscles. Hold for a beat, then do the other leg. Perform two sets of eight reps.
