In Modern Psychoanalysis we are keenly aware of the importance of the therapeutic container. In childhood the “good enough” caregivers create and maintain an emotional container within which a child can safely have all of their feelings while feeling that the parent is secure and capable in the feeling states that are aroused within them. Most of our patients will come to us having not experienced this type of containment in the therapeutic frame that was needed for our patients as children. This can be a demanding and extraordinary rewarding task. This course will support clinicians in exploring literature about this essential part of treatment while also gaining tools and having experiences that illuminate how to apply this in their work. 7.5 CE's offered through NBCC Course Objectives: 1. To define and assist participants in understanding how the setting, countertransference, transference, and the intersubjective aspects of the treatment are especially salient. 2. This course uses psychoanalytic object-relations model of the mind, to focus on engaging clients new to the analytic therapeutic treatment process. 3. Participants will learn techniques for establishing the therapeutic alliance while balancing therapeutic boundaries. 4. The class examines how to understand the client’s fears and protective measures and create techniques that provide a safe holding environment that aid to bring the client material into the space of the therapeutic relationship. 5. Describe Melanie Klein’s views on the nature of drives, the ego, and its defenses and developmental positions. 6. Describe Winnicott’s views on personhood, aloneness, true and false self, transitional phenomena and maturation as they contribute to understanding the treatment container. 7. This course will give attention to the major developmental aspects from prenatal life through adolescence and into adulthood. 8. Apply object relation theory toward an understanding of the development of the therapeutic dyad.
