Description
We return to Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church for our second concert of the 2022-2023 season, Winter Feast: Organ, Choir, and Jazz. We are pleased to announce our James Deitz competition winner, Mio Imai; she will perform the first movement of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 3 in G Major, KV 216. The concert will include the joyful short oratorio work with jazz ensemble by local composer Dr. George Allen called Summer People/Winter People, with a text calling for the unity of humanity. We conclude with the towering Saint-Saëns Organ Symphony featuring organist Edward Landin Senn. Each year, members have the pleasure of accompanying professional soloists under the guidance of Music Director Don Liuzzi and Concertmaster Paul Roby. See mlso.org for more details. Don Liuzzi, Music Director Maestro Don Liuzzi became the Music Director of the Main Line Symphony in our 2014-2015 season and led the establishment of The James Deitz Memorial Young Artist Competition. Don Liuzzi holds the Dwight V. Dowley Chair as Principal Timpani for the Philadelphia Orchestra. Born and raised in Weymouth, Massachusetts, Don earned his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Michigan and his Master of Music degree from Temple University. Before joining The Philadelphia Orchestra in 1989, Mr. Liuzzi was a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony percussion section; he taught percussion and conducted the percussion ensemble at Duquesne University, was assistant conductor of the Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestra, and appeared on PBS’ nationally syndicated Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood, performing marimba and percussion solos. Mr. Liuzzi has given master classes at most major music schools throughout the United States and in Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Spain, Korea, Japan, and China. He joined the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music in January 1994. He has also held faculty positions at Rowan University and guest faculty status at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and the Manhattan School of Music. Mr. Liuzzi recently completed 10 years as music director of the Philadelphia All City High School Orchestra, and is founding conductor of the Curtis Institute’s 20-21 New Music Ensemble.
