Please join us in celebration of Black History Month for an hour long African Drumming Master Class with well known instructor, Kazi Oliver!
A djembe is a rope-tuned skin-covered goblet drum played with bare hands, originally from West Africa. According to the Bambara people in Mali, the name of the djembe comes from the saying "Anke djé, anke bé" which translates to "everyone gather together in peace" and defines the drum's purpose. They herald political and social events attending ceremonies of birth, death, and marriage.
Kazi Oliver has been teaching for 45 years and performing for over 40 years. Professionally, Kazi has performed in many places. Most notable appearances have been at the famed jazz venue, the Village Vanguard at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Kazi enjoys his appearances at community festivals, schools and events that bring together multi-generational/multicultural audiences to experience and enjoy the awesome power of the African drum.
