In celebration of Black History Month….The California State University, Northridge Department of Cinema and Television Arts will present a special screening of the critically acclaimed 1996 theatrical release ‘Once Upon A Time When We Were Colored.’ The heart warming drama is a coming of age story set in the segregated South in 1946 and is an emotionally quiet saga played against a tumultuous era in Black communal life.Starring Phylicia Rashad, Issac Hayes, Al Freeman, Jr., Richard Roundtree and Bernie Casey, the film was directed by Tim Reid with beautiful cinematography by John Simmons. John Simmons, ASC will discuss the film after the showing. John Simmons is an Emmy award-winning cinematographer, photographer, painter, collage artist and professor. He has served as Director of Photography on 25 television series and various feature films. John is a member of the prestigious American Society of Cinematographers. In addition his photographs are held in collections in some of the most prestigious museums like the Getty.Professors Anna Marie Piersimoni and Nate Thomas will moderate.The screening will take place Saturday, February 11th at 2pm in the CSUN Elaine and Alan Armer Screening Theater located in Manzanita Hall 100.
