Description

The local Sierra Nevada Sierra Club group is starting up a monthly hiking series. Whether you are new to Nevada County or a lifetime resident, get outside and meet new like-minded locals on this iconic hike along Deer Creek. About the hike: The hike will be guided by Sierra Club hiking leaders. The 3.5 mile hike will start downtown Nevada City at the the Nisenan Arts and Culture Building and will head through town to the Deer Creek Trailhead, then across the Angkula Seo Bridge (Nisenan Suspension Bridge) and back the other side of Deer Creek back to town. The hike is considered beginner to intermediate level, with minimal elevation change and well maintained trail system. The 3.5 hike is estimated to take 1.5-2 hours. Make sure to stick around after the hike for snacks and refreshments and and a tour of the Nisenan Arts and Culture lead by Shelly Covert from CHIRP (California Heritage: Indigenous Research Project). Come socialize and learn more about the Tribute Trail system and its history. What to bring: Please be sure to wear proper hiking attire and warm layers. Don't forget to bring water and snacks. We recommend wearing a small backpack or fanny pack to carry everything on the hike. Getting to the trailhead: Meet at 10:00 am at the Nisenan Arts and Culture in Downtown Nevada City, located at 225 Broad St. Before the hike there will be a quick introduction, a safety rundown and quick history of the trail. Additional info: We are capping the hike at 50 people for trail safety so if you want to attend please grab a free ticket. Since we are limiting spots, please only place an order for a ticket/tickets if you are for sure committed to attending the hike.Leashed dogs are welcome on the hike. If your dog is not good around crowds or with other dogs we kindly ask to leave your pup at home. Please email SierraNevadaSierraClub.org with additional questions. About CHIRP: CHIRP was created to research, document, preserve, and protect California Indigenous Nisenan culture, following the history and stories of the Foothill Nisenan people of the Nevada City Rancheria, and has played an important role in the re-introduction of the Nisenan people to the non-native community now residing in the Nisenan homelands of the Bear and Yuba river watersheds, especially in Nevada County where the Nisenan once had a federally recognized reservation.
