Part time laborer O.J. Noer Turfgrass Research Facility This position functions as general laborer for maintenance of the grounds at the O.J. Noer Turfgrass Education Facility. The major portion of the work responsibilities would be the maintenance of the research plots. Under general supervision of the station's Superintendent, the applicant is responsible for employing critical thinking skills, proficient communication, and sound time management when carrying out the following: 1) Assisting faculty, staff, and students in turfgrass research and educational activities; 2) Mowing all bentgrass plots, weed control, fertilizer applications, watering and topdressing 3) Assist in all other areas of building and grounds maintenance The UW-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences is committed to maintaining and growing a culture that embraces diversity, inclusion, and equity, believing that these values are foundational elements of our excellence and fundamental components of a positive and enriching learning and working environment for all students, faculty, and staff. Goal: A 50% Maintenance of mixed lawn and landscape areas Activity: A1 Maintain various turfgrass research plots from Golf Course Putting Greens, Golf Course Fairways, Athletic Turf, General lawn area and landscape beds. This can include but is not limited to mowing, raking, watering, weed control, prepping new research plots and seeding those plots. Activity: A2 Control weed growth in lawn and landscape areas, and around tree bases. a. Cultivate soil as needed to discourage weeds and prevent compaction. b. Apply mulch to landscape plantings to reduce weed growth and preserve soil moisture and temperatures. c. Use hand and mechanical tool to facilitate mowing around trees, shrubs and landscape plantings. Activity: A3 As needed be capable to make fertilizer application to any areas of the property. Activity: A4 Water landscape plantings as necessary using sprinkling cans, sprinklers, hoses, water tanks or irrigation systems. Activity: A5 Operate tractors, utility vehicles and various other equipment. Activity: A6 Automated irrigation system use, maintenance and repair. Goal: B 20% Annual and perennial bed maintenance Activity: B1 Prepare planting beds for planting of spring plantings or fall planting of spring bulbs. Activity: B2 Cultivate, water, weed, fertilize floral displays. Activity: B3 Remove dead blossoms, prune and mulch as necessary. Activity: B4 Remove annual floral displays after frost and clean up beds, trim back, and perennials. Goal: C 30% General grounds maintenance responsibilities Activity: C1 Turf bed preparation, seeding and sodding. Activity: C2 Lawn mowing and trimming. Activity: C3 Water and fertilize lawns, trees, shrubs and flowers. Activity: C4 Provide light preventative maintenance for all equipment used to maintain the lawn and landscape areas. This to include but not limited to sharpening mower blades, routing mechanical maintenance. Activity: C5 Operate various trucks, tractors, front end loaders and equipment to topdress bentgrass greens.. Hand shovel when necessary. Activity: C6 Water lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers. Activity: C7 Other duties as assigned. Knowledge: 1 Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with the public, staff, and faculty, both verbally and written. Knowledge: 2 Operating knowledge of tools, power equipment, and medium size (75 hp) tractors. Knowledge: 3 Provide solid communication skills Knowledge: 4 Knowledge of computer devices and related applications. Knowledge: 5 Knowledge of workplace hazards and safety, including Worker Protection Standards. Knowledge: 6 Obtain authorization to drive UW vehicles including utility, tractors, and pickup trucks. Additional Requirements: Must be able to lift 50 lbs Duration: This position starts mid-May and terminates in late October 2023
