Description
A Yucatecan Meal Feautring Local Food Join us for our first "As American As..." Dinner Series takeout meal for the year, featuring the cuisine of Yucatan, Mexico! Kristin Arceo and her husband, Gerardo Arceo Gomez, a Yucatan native, curated this menu and Kristin will cook this dinner, a fundraiser for Jonesborough Locally Grown. This dinner will incorporate local ingredients from our farmers into their authentic meal. This take home dinner will be on January 23rd, with pick up time between 5pm - 6pm. "As American As..." inspired by John Bunker, known as the apple whisperer, who has spent a lifetime identifying and raising old apple tree varieties found throughout Maine. Bunker says the phrase "As American As Apple Pie" is a fitting description because, just like apple pie is made up of ingredients from all over the world, so is our country. While many may see apple pie as "All American", it's important to take a deeper look: apples are originally from the mountains of central Asia; wheat is from Turkey; cinnamon is native to Sri Lanka; sugar cane is from Southeast Asia. It's exactly what makes cuisine in our country, and especially our region here in Central Appalachia, special and rich with culture and history. Our new dinner series will serve as a way to highlight our community, food culture, and local ingredients that have roots and origins from all over the world, and for this January's dinner, guests will enjoy the follow authentic Yucatecan meal: A Relleno Negro Grits Bowl with Chicken Cooked in Chilmole Buth Negro (pork meatball filled with hardboiled egg) Pickled Red Onion Tortillas on the Side This dinner does not have a vegetarian or gluten free alternative, but future dinners will do stay tuned for future months! This meal is take out only and requires a reservation as we have limited space available. Tickets are $35 a person. All proceeds go directly to Jonesborough Locally Grown, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization whose mission is to connect farmers, food and the community to grow a vibrant local food system. We work to create and expand markets and educational opportunities for local producers and consumers through Jonesborough Farmers Market and Boone Street Market.
