Description
URBAN DESERT CABARET @ FURSTWURLD Joe City Garcia (acoustic & electric guitars, vocals) Urban Desert Cabaret (UDC) is the musical project of Joe City Garcia. Starting as a teen decades ago in Northern New Mexico, Joe’s path as a guitarist/singer/songwriter has been a lifelong pilgrimage to becoming authentic—a destination at which he says he’s only begun to arrive. UDC emerged as a serious musical entity in 2014 when Joe returned to the Joshua Tree area where he was uplifted by the unexpectedly generous and inspired forces of the small but potent local music and arts community. UDC released Sometimes the Angels (2015), followed by Shadow of a Ghost (2016), resulting in three European solo tours and hundreds of local gigs including a 2.5 year residency at the infamous Landers Brew, followed by six months at Giant Rock Meeting Room. In 2019 a recorded show at Furstwurld resulted in the release of Urban Desert Cabaret Live @ Furstwurld. After the pandemic hiatus, a new batch of songs was recorded for the upcoming release of Give Me to the Wind. This current return to Furstwurld is a celebration of the new album’s digital release, and a retrospective of the previous UDC catalog. Danny Frankel (drums, percussion) Danny has played drums and percussion with countless artists, notably a 7-year stint recording and touring with k.d. lang, 3 years with Lou Reed, and recently with She and Him (Zooey Deschanel & M. Ward). Then there’s Urban Verbs (worked with Eno), the Flying Karamozov Brothers Theatre Troupe, Robin Holcomb, Bill Frisell, Bo Diddley, John Cale, Laurie Anderson, to name a few. He’s also produced his own avant-garde rhythm projects, including a collaboration with the great conceptual guitarist Nels Cline (Wilco). Bobby Furgo (violin, keyboards) Bobby is well-known for his work recording and touring with the immortal Leonard Cohen, and others including Eric Burdon and The Animals, Nancy Sinatra, Lee Hazelwood, Freddy Fender, Wanda Jackson, and the list goes on. His many prestigious appearances include Carnegie Hall, Juno Awards, Jay Leno, Austin City Limits and more. Gar Robertson (electric guitar, bass, lap steel, pedal steel, mandolin) Gar is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer and recording engineer. He owns and operates Red Barn Recorders in Morongo Valley. He has played with and/or produced an extensive list of local and SoCal artists (including UDC’s Shadow of a Ghost), as well as many visiting from faraway locales who want to capture the elusive “desert vibe.” Guest set: Robert Garson Robert Garson was born in Arkansas and raised in the San Joaquin Valley of central California where his folks danced to Merle Haggard and Buck Owens performing at the Big Fresno Barn. He now resides in the high desert of Southern California near Joshua Tree. Steeped in the traditions of country, bluegrass, and rhythm and blues, he marries ancient and new lyric sensibility to the deep grooves heard in roadhouses from Bakersfield to Memphis.
