The musical “1619 The Journey of a People” traces this history through the nation’s Revolutionary and Civil wars, the post-war Reconstruction Era, the Harlem Renaissance, the 1960s civil rights movement and the modern Black Lives Matter movement. The production’s score features hip-hop, jazz, blues, as well as West African drumming and spirituals. Based on the ongoing initiative from The New York Times Magazine The project explored the history of slavery in the United States and with its examination of how the legacy of slavery continues to shape life in the United States, the project started in-depth conversations about how American history is taught and written.
