Join Victor Co., Mayor Elaine M. O'Neal, Senator Natalie S. Murdock, Representative Jeffers, Fire Chief Robert Zoldos II, and the living descendants of the Excelsior Hook and Ladder Company (1881). During Black History month we will honor and learn about the lost history of Durham's all-Black volunteer firefighters. These firefighters of Black Wall were more than just firefighters they were early business owners, veterans, farmers, and voters. Most of the firefighters were former slaves or the children of slaves who built and protected the Hayti District of Durham for decades. The Excelsior Hook and Ladder Company predates the City of Durham Fire Department and was located on Pine St. (now S.Roxboro Rd.)
