SALARY: $22.13 - $30.25 Hourly $46,021.80 - $62,927.76 Annually OPENING DATE: 01/27/23 CLOSING DATE: 02/10/23 11:59 PM POSITION PURPOSE: Starting salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity. Typical placement is entry to mid range. Position is responsible for performing a variety of park management and maintenance operations functions. Specific assignment or duties may be dependent upon placement of the position within the organizational structure of the Parks Division. General knowledge in chemical applications, irrigation practices, plant physiology, and equipment operation is required for all positions. Greater expertise in any one of these areas may be required depending on responsibilities and placement of the position. JOB FUNCTIONS / SCOPE OF AUTHORITY: ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Maintain park integrity through turf management program, (mow, irrigate, chemical application, aeration, fertilization and top dress), shrub and tree maintenance, trash and graffiti removal, vandalism repair, and snow removal as required. Performs duties related to construction: concrete, retaining walls, drainage, grade work, erosion control, and installation of amenities. Operates large and small equipment including but not limited to (mowers, snow plows, tractors, loaders) as required. Inspect equipment and tools for safety. Inspect, repair and maintain traffic medians, park sprinklers, turf, playground equipment and park amenities. Schedule and program both manual and computerized irrigation systems. Performs record keeping duties for playground, backflow, operation equipment, task, expense reports, and pesticide application forms. Attends training, seminars, and meetings as required. Assists other park maintenance staff with typical standard maintenance duties. Prepares parks for special events. Assign and inspect work of seasonal employees, volunteer and community service. Performs snow removal as assigned. Demonstrates a respectful attitude towards customers and coworkers that promotes teamwork, open communication, and effective customer service. Acts with the customer in mind, responds to requests promptly and provides effective services or solutions for customers. Exercises appropriate level of initiative and judgment to make decisions within the scope of assigned authority. ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Strong knowledge of sport facilities: tennis/pickleball/basketball courts, skate parks, disc golf, exercise courses, football/soccer/baseball fields, volleyball, and lacrosse. Strong knowledge and experience with urban park maintenance including horticultural practices, landscape, construction, herbicides, and irrigation system maintenance. Ability to assign and inspect work of seasonal employees. Flexibility to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Ability to operate large and small equipment in both an efficient and safe manner. Equipment to include but not limited to mowers, slope mowers, tractors, dump trucks, loaders, large fertilizer spreaders, snow plows, wood chippers and pesticide application equipment as required. Strong manual dexterity skills to operate maintenance tools including but not limited to chain saws, power tools, push spreaders, string trimmers, snow blowers, pesticide sprayers, edgers and pole and hand pruners. Ability to service and maintain assigned equipment and make minor adjustments and repairs. Ability to inspect equipment and tools to ensure they are in safe operating condition. Basic computer skills. Ability to effectively communicate information, both verbally and in writing, to support organizational objectives and interact with all levels of personnel within the city in a positive and cooperative manner. Irrigation Strong knowledge of irrigation pipe repair, valve repair, and troubleshooting of wiring problems. Ability to operate Jack Hammers, picks, shovels, moles, trencher, backhoe, pitchforks and volt -ohm meters. Open Space Strong knowledge and experience with urban park and open space maintenance practices including proper horticultural practices, landscaping and construction. Ability to inspect, repair and maintain soft and hard surface trails, fences, irrigation systems, signs, wildlife habitat areas and other park and open space amenities. Ability to identify weed species and correctly apply appropriate pesticides in a safe manner. Ability to maintain park and open space integrity through accepted horticultural practices such as mowing, weed control, fertilization, pruning, trash and graffiti removal, vandalism repair, amenity repair and snow removal. OTHER FUNCTIONS: May perform operation and maintenance of viewing/interactive water fountains. May perform maintenance of Old Town District. May perform lake operations. Other duties as required. —Employees are held accountable for all duties of this job— SCOPE OF AUTHORITY: Receives direct supervision under the direction of the parks supervisor. Plans own work and work of others to meet defined work plans and objectives. Defined procedures cover most duties including department policies, laws, and regulations of applying pesticides, traffic controls, safety policies, noise ordinance, MSDS sheets, basic state, federal, and local laws, city ordinances, laws for locates, CDLs, Division of Wildlife, usage guidelines, special interest requirements, and Arvada personnel rules and procedures. Generally expected to deal with different and specialized situations in the job. Financial Accountability: Makes recommendations to supervisor for budget considerations. Authorized to make purchases up to $2,000. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Responsible for the training, assigning, scheduling and directing the work of volunteer, community service, and seasonal workers. Plans own work and work of others to meet defined work plans and objectives. WORKING ENVIRONMENT / QUALIFICATIONS: WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES: The work environment/physical activities described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. Work is primarily performed in an outdoor environment with moderate noise levels. Physical effort and activities include: operating a personal or City-owned motor vehicle to drive, constant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, exposure to moving equipment hazards, pesticides, bio hazards, noise, weather conditions, vibrating equipment, working in high places 6’ or above, working in confined spaces and, traffic control. Also requires exposure to various chemicals, dust and fumes, insects, and contact with animals. Requires strenuous physical work with heavy lifting, pushing or pulling of objects up to 80 pounds frequently. MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, LICENSE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE): High school diploma or GED equivalency and minimum one (1) year experience in park maintenance or related field required. Position requires: Valid driver’s license. Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicators License with Categories #206- Turf and #207 Ornamental are needed within twelve (12) months of appointment.
