Description
UNCOVERED is a Spokane based, storytelling platform that produces short docu-style productions from individuals who are willing to share their stories of overcoming toxic shame and the secrets we hide from those around us and even sometimes, ourselves. Join us March 30th from 6pm-9pm at the Garland Theater to not only hear the journeys of four courageous people uncovering parts of themselves they once kept hidden, but to also hear from renowned author, speaker, and TV host, Leon Logothetis, who will be live, joining the Spokane community all the way from his home in Los Angeles, to share as the keynote speaker for the evening. Leon's message is one for all as he speaks on what it truly looks like to be brave. Leon is a global adventurer who for over a decade has traveled the globe to over 100 countries to highlight the good in humanity. Documented through his best-selling books and TV Shows, Leon works constantly to inspire the world with his message of Kindness and Hope, which is best shown through his original series "The Kindness Diaries," streaming on Discovery Plus. Following Leon's speech, four short documentaries will begin, highlighting the stories of the following people: Stephanie Hance: Stephanie has a story so many will relate to as she vulnerably shares about her struggles with food and body image. It's taken her decades to confront the toxic messages from diet culture and thin culture that have silenced an unimaginable number of people, sending them to their graves never having truly lived because they were too consumed chasing smaller bodies. Her story is a beautiful journey to self-love, acceptance, and appreciation for the body she's in and how strong she's discovered she can be, both mentally and physically. Askia Underwood: Askia hopes her story will help even just one person choose to listen to our inner voice before it’s too late. You know the voice. It's the quiet whisper that sometimes doesn't really seem audible as it says, “Stop. Turn around. This path isn't for you.” In her case, ignoring that voice almost cost her her life. Her story is one of courage, faith, and learning to be honest with herself in the presence of a controlling and abusive partner. Her story is one of learning to put her own needs before her children's. Today, she's found her voice as a survivor of domestic abuse, a label she refuses to allow shame to cast any shadows over her. Virginia Clark: "There were a lot of inconsistencies in my home life, there were a lot of traumatic events, and when you feel so unworthy... you tend to just kind of want to fade away." Virginia hopes her story will inspire anyone struggling with mental health to seek help. She courageously shares about her battle with suicide ideation. It's a journey that takes her all the way back to her 5-year-old self when she experienced her first attempt at suicide, too young to even put words to the daily pain and trauma she was trying to escape. She hopes her story can be an important piece in chipping away at the stigmas that keep so many silent in their battle with mental illness, and allow us all to have a little more pause, a little more compassion, and a little more curiosity about the paths others have walked before casting judgement. Katie Chin: To the outside world, Katie's life looks fabulous, and it is! Standing on the shoulders of a restaurant empire built by her late mother, Leeann Chin, Katie is an incredibly talented celebrity chef, award-winning cookbook author, food blogger and the Culinary Ambassador to the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation. She's appeared on the Food Network, The Real on Fox, The Today Show, The Hallmark Channel and most recently, The Kelly Clarkson Show. However, amidst all the success and fame, she will be the first one to tell you about her family's battle with mental health and her own personal struggles. "Some of the trauma I've experienced and my family experienced, if I don't share it, I can't truly be free... and if I don't share it, I have missed an opportunity to help others." - Katie Chin _____________ WHAT TO EXPECT: Arrive when the doors open at 6pm to grab a drink from the no-host bar and prepare a plate of lite appetizers from Red Rock Catering (included with your ticket) to take to your seat. The program for the evening will begin promptly at 6:25pm and end at 9pm. Viewer discretion is advised. This is an event most suitable for adults, but the content may also be appropriate and even inspiring for those as young as 15. ______________ UNCOVERED is a for purpose, storytelling platform founded by journalist and storyteller Nichole Mischke, who stumbled into this work after experiencing the healing power of doing the one thing she swore she would never do: Own her full story and come clean about her secret, ten-year battle with bulimia. The transformation she experienced in sharing the one thing about herself she thought she'd take to the grave, inspired her to quit her job in TV news and pursue a path to help others also share the parts of their stories shame tells all of us to hide. Stories are selected through a submission process at StoriesUncovered.com, giving anyone the opportunity to have their story magnified and shared in a beautiful, docu-style production.
