Maxo Vanka Murals: Teacher Workshop

Kids

24 Maryland Avenue,Pittsburgh PA 15209

26 February, 2023

Description

Visit the awe-inspiring and thought-provoking murals of Maxo Vanka, and spend the afternoon in community with fellow arts educators. We will explore how Vanka's life story and the experiences of working-class and immigrant communities influenced his painting of these murals in 1937 and 1941. Through creative hands-on activities and discussion, we will reflect on the relevance of the mural’s themes of love, empathy, justice and injustice to our own lives and society today. There will be time at the end of the program for socializing, refreshments and reflection. All necessary materials will be supplied, but you’re welcome to bring your own sketchbook! The Murals are located in St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church in Millvale. While easy to spot on the hill, the one-way streets can make getting to the church tricky. You may want to check out Google Maps to spot the route ahead of time. There is free parking available in the lot across the street from the church or on the surrounding neighborhood roads. Please note that restrooms are in the basement, only accessible by a short flight of stairs. For more information about accessibility, please visit the church's website at https://vankamurals.org/visit/private-tours/ and scroll down for accessibility information. Learn more about the murals here: https://vankamurals.org/ Or follow them on Instagram @savemaxovanka Participants will receive 2 hours of Act 48 credit. Masking requirements are continually evolving for in-person events so please bring your mask so you are prepared if the venue requires masks.
