Description
In partnership with the On the Canals program, the Village of Brockport has been able to purchase snow shoes and winter trekking poles in a variety of weight limits. We will be traveling along the canal starting at the Main Street lift bridge parking area and traveling west and then turn around and return to the beginning. Our mode of transportation will be snow shoes or if there is not enough snow, we will be hiking it. Gather your family and friends to experience the beauty of winter, and the snow firsthand on snow shoes. It is also peaceful along the canal with lots of winter wildlife. It is suitable for beginners of any age and fitness level. If you can walk, you can snowshoe. We have added a couple of new dates, February 11 and February 26. Reserve your tickets. Keep checking back in case there are cancellations. We will meet at the Welcome Center, 11 Water Street, Brockport, where there is municipal parking and bathrooms. We will hand out equipment and adjust your snow shoes and poles and then walk to the canal path to begin our journey. We will finish at the Welcome Center to warm up with hot chocolate. The excursion will start at 1:00 pm. We will go about a mile and a half to two miles and should return in one and a half to two hours. Please don't bring any of your four legged friends so that we don't get tangled up as we go. The best shoes to wear while showshoeing are winter boots or hiking boots. Wearing the right clothing; layers that are warm, easy to adjust, vent easily, and are durable are best. If the layers are lightweight, this makes things even more comfortable. If you are able to carry a small pack, you should bring an extra layer of warm clothing, hat, gloves, sun glasses, and a water bottle. Sunscreen will help protect your face. Your phone should be kept in an inner pocket close to your body so that the cold doesn't drain the battery. Please follow all current Covid-19 guidelines for indoor/outdoor activities. Reserve your equipment by picking the appropriate weight ticket. This will ensure that your snow shoes are working and will be easy to manage. There is some leeway but if you use snow shoes rated at a lower weight, you will sink more in the snow and therefore expend more energy. If you have your own equipment, sign up for that ticket and join us. In case of severe weather, please check back here for event status.
