PURPOSE/OVERVIEW: Information / Professional Development workshop for professionals, primarily social workers, that are working in the human services, schools, mental health providers, child welfare and other organizations providing services to children and families. The university also has partnership with the State of Louisiana, provided Title IV-E funds to support the Child Welfare System by offering student internships to train and increase the child welfare workforce. The workshop focus is to provide insight regarding:
The Impact of Empowering African American Fathers in the lives of youth
MEETING OBJECTIVES:
• Participants will be able to identify barriers/obstacles to the involvement of black men in their organizations/institutions
• Participants will be able to articulate an understanding of the historical challenges faced by black fathers
• Participants will express a deeper appreciation of the role(s) played by African American fathers
• Participants will critique their own practice with African American Fathers and seek ways to provide better intervention, service and support

• How involved are African American fathers in the lives of their children?
• What has been the role of black fathers historically in the U.S.?
• What are the current obstacles/barriers to maximum involvement of black fathers in the lives of their children?
• How can social workers and social service organizations (private/public) support and encourage involvement of fathers?
