Description

The “Regional Rail Response to a Derailment” is a full day awareness-level training course on responding to a rail incident with hazardous materials. This course is the result of the combined efforts of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), Association of American Railroads (AAR), International Society of Fire Service Instructors (ISFSI), the IAFC Hazmat Committee, and American Shortline and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRA). It was made possible by the Assistance for Local Emergency Response Training (ALERT) Grant from DOT PHMSA. This training is designed to help you better understand the rail industry, response efforts, and agency-specific roles should a train derailment or similar incident occur; and help you understand the unified and coordinated response activities to a train derailment. Key Takeaways from the Course -An understanding of why preplanning is vital to an effective response. -An understanding of the response disciplines and associated roles during a response to a rail incident. -Knowledge about the industry and rail lines within your region, including the commodities that are transported. -An understanding about the need for a coordinated effort when responding to an incident, and how to effectively manage available resources. -Experience through a group exercise to reinforce the training concepts around a train derailment scenario. -Course Certificate from the IAFC Academy for 8 hazardous material training contact hours.
