Program DescriptionSAMHSA’s GAINS Center for Behavioral Health and Justice Transformation, operated by Policy Research Associates, Inc., is known nationally for its work in regard to people with mental illness and co-occurring substance use disorders involved in the criminal justice system. OverviewAlthough prevalence estimates vary, there is consensus that high percentages of justice- involved women and men have experienced serious trauma throughout their lifetime. The reverberating effects of traumatic experiences can challenge a person’s capacity for recovery and pose significant barriers to accessing services, often resulting in an increased risk of meeting the criminal justice system. Community-based criminal justice professionals Police Community corrections (probation, parole, and pre-trial services officers) Court personnelBehavioral Health/Substance Abuse/Prevention professionalsObjectives How Being Trauma-Informed Improves Criminal Justice System Responses is a workshop for criminal justice professionals to: Increase understanding and awareness of the impact of traumaDevelop trauma-informed responsesProvide strategies for developing and implementing trauma-informed policiesTrauma-informed criminal justice responses can help to avoid re-traumatizing individuals, and thereby increase safety for all, decrease recidivism, and promote and support recovery of justice-involved women and men with serious mental illness. Partnerships across systems can also help to link individuals to trauma-informed services and treatment for trauma. Presented by - Jennifer Hilton - WestCare Foundation Director of Training Jennifer has been in the Mental Health and Substance abuse field for over 24 years. She is WestCare Foundation’s Director of Training. In her role she leads the development of and directs training for 1,900 plus personnel. She also services in a volunteer position as the Chairperson for the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention (NCSP). She is part time instructor for College of Southern Nevada (CSN) and St. Pete College of Florida. Jennifer is a certified safeTALK Trainer since 2018; a Crisis Prevention Intervention Instructor since 2004; and a Certified Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Adult and Youth Instructor since 2014. She is considered a Subject Matter Expert in the field of training. She presents at conferences across the country on Trauma, Trauma Informed Care, Mental Health Awareness, and Mental Health First Aid.
