Originals vs Covers Conversation

I notice there seems to be two 'camps' here. Many ads saying stop playing covers for no pay in front of drunks wearing out your gear etc. Well, it seems to me that the original bands play for nearly nothing and the covers are making at least 100$ per night. Seems to me those trying to start original bands are those that did not have the talent to be successful as a cover band. And the comment about wearing out your gear. Seems like they want to have it safe and weather free sitting in their basements not having to play out anywhere. And as far as 'making it". Seems to me most and almost all successful original bands started off as cover bands. And many great now original bands got their first hits doing someone else's songs. To me if you do not have the skills to do someone elses songs well when you can just listen to it and copy it how can you be able to do originals ? Well I am open minded and would love to hear the original sides point of view esp about how many original bands started doing covers.
