What is Heather Rose Signs? I have started volunteering teaching fitness classes using American Sign Language to anyone that falls within the Deaf community that uses ASL. I am volunteering my time as well to help fitness spaces add in accommodations that I have learned over the years in the field to anyone that falls within the Hard of hearing communities. I am blending my passion for fitness, interpreting and my passion for better accessibility in fitness space together. What is this event? I am going to be sharing stories of members from the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities who I have interviewed about their experience in the fitness space. Then Dustin Feldman and I want to open up the floor and have a discussion with members of the Boston fitness community in how we can bring about change and #makefitnessaccessible for the Deaf and Hard of hearing communities. We will also be learning American Sign Language fitness terminology from Deaf fitness professionals! Goal: To support Fitness Studios and Instructors in expanding their awareness on the culture of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities, and learn how to create an inclusive space for people to feel welcome and come back to group fitness time and time again.
