July 17th was a typical Summer Saturday evening at the Gerding’s. Family, friends, food and fun were all present. We were experiencing Mississippi hot weather in Northern Kentucky that evening and they were very thankful to have the pool to cool them off. Grant (20) had his usual crew over for some pool time, corn hole, fire pit and pizzas on the grill. A wonderful evening was had by ALL until Grant decided to dive in the pool to cool off one last time. Bob and Paula were woken up to his friend saying, Grant dove in the pool and can’t move anything except his head! Instantaneously, ALL of their lives were changed forever! He was rushed to the university of Cincinnati trauma emergency room where The Gerdings were told Grant was paralyzed from chest down! He fractured his c6 vertebrae and did damage to c4, c5 and c6; along with damaging his spinal cord! His surgeon immediately removed portions of the vertebrae to release spinal cord pressure and reconstructed the vertebrae. After spending a week in the Neuro Intensive care unit at UC; Grant was transferred to Drake rehabilitation Acute care facility in Cincinnati . On August 26th, he was discharged to go home. He no longer needed Acute care, meaning he didn’t need to be under a physicians care 3x a week; however, he still needs care 24/7 at home and needs to continue in intense physical therapy at the Frazier institute in Louisville, Ky. Grant’s parents, Bob and Paula chose to care for him on their own . Not only is this physically and mentally tough on the whole family; it has taken a major financial toll on them with Paula not returning to work and the overall expenses that aren’t covered by insurance. Grant currently has PT/OT 3 times a week at Frazier Rehab in Louisville and is amazing everyone with his achievements. God is working through this young man. The strength, determination and positive outlook is teaching us all. He has a long way to go but He’s continuing to keep working hard! Getting stronger by the week!
