Description

Join us at the Hunt Institute on February 9th for an ImpactNights™ to honor Black History Month and our topic of "Rooted: Examining the African American Experience and Environmental Justice - Past, Present and Future!"It is well-documented that the impact of climate change disproportionally affects marginalized communities, specifically, throughout Dallas and the United States. Environmental Justice means no population should bear the unbalanced share of negative environmental consequence due to laws, regulations, and policies. To create effective change, we must understand the history behind environmental racism as well as include meaningful involvement from affected communities. In-person: This will be an in-person event only. Check-in around 5:00PM, grab a cup of coffee and network with like-minded professionals. Around 5:30PM, we break out into our subject-specific sessions. At 6:30PM, we wrap things up and everyone is invited to a reception to continue the conversation. Excited to share three breakout sessions! We will be exploring this timely topic in the usual format of small, expert-led discussion sessions. The breakout sessions are: American Historical Narratives of Environmental Racism and Injustice Examining and discussing the history behind America's discriminatory practices against communities of color, and how it lead the U.S. to the current state of environmental racism. Environmental Activism & Communities of Color in Dallas Exploring the impact of environmental injustice that we see in the City of Dallas today, and learning about the inspiring people who are mobilizing to make a positive change in their communities and our city. Reimagining Justice: Access to Clean Natural Resources, Equal Opportunity, and the Pursuit of Equity Looking to the future, what does environmental justice look like for African Americans and all communities of color in our city and globally.
