Galentine’s Day Celebration: In Honor of American Heart Month & “Go Red for Women” We are kindly asking for donations of $25, which will go towards further public health education, advocacy, and program efforts: https://secure.givelively.org/donate/dreamsickle-kids-foundation/bchwa The Black Community Health & Wellness Association of Nevada is hosting an event on Saturday, February 11th, from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm to raise awareness about heart disease prevention, detection, and treatment strategies, primarily among women in communities of color. In the African American community, cardiovascular disease (CVD) kills over 50,000 women a year, and subsequently strokes that occur from CVD are the leading cause of death for African American women (AHA, 2023). In addition, Hispanic American women are more likely to develop CVD, approximately 10 years before non-Hispanics and only 1 in 3 Hispanic women are aware that CVD is the number 1 killer in their community (AHA, 2023). Therefore, it is vitally important to have an event that supports heart disease prevention and educational efforts, in order to further empower women and their communities. As women are often the primary caretakers in their home, have a unique set of healthcare challenges, and play key roles in supporting a large community network, educational efforts and strategies are strongly needed. The keynote speaker for the event will be Dr. Christina Madison, who is a public health pharmacist, recent White House panelist on health equity, featured speaker on Good Morning America (GMA), and TedX speaker. She will give an interactive presentation on how women can better manage their lifestyles to prevent heart disease and stroke, where to seek testing/resources, what are the signs/symptoms, common myths, importance of CPR training, and latest research. As a follow-up to this event, we are scheduled to have a CPR/AED training/certification on Saturday, February 18th, which will be free for participants.
