The Newberry County Forestry Association is planning their 19th biennial Forestry Focus program for Saturday, March 4, 2023 at Newberry Piedmont Tech. For those who are not familiar with Forestry Focus, it is hosted by the Clemson Extension Service and the Newberry County Forestry Association. This is an all-day event that runs from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. Registration will begin at 8:30 am. Lunch will be catered at the educational meeting, allowing the participants to interact with each other and Forest Industry Professionals. There are 4.5 category 1 credit hours available for continuing forestry education. 2023 Forestry Focus Tentative Agenda March 4, 2023 Newberry Piedmont Technical College 1922 Wilson Road Newberry, SC 29108 8:30 - 8:50 Registration 9:00 -9:10 Welcome Representative of the Newberry Forestry Association 9:10 - 9:40 South Carolina Landowners Issues Speaker: Cam Crawford (Forestry Association of South Carolina) Presentation will be on the current issues that SC landowners are facing and what the Forestry Association of South Carolina does to protect the SC landowners rights. 9:45 - 10:45 Hardwood Management Speaker: Dr. Stephen Peairs (Silvicultural Specialist, Clemson Extension) Presentation will be on how hardwoods can be better managed through harvest techniques, herbicides, and planting/rejuvenating quality species. 10:45 - 10:55 Break 11:00 - 12:00 Local Market Impacts on Stumpage Prices Michael Mills (Forester, Claybourn Walters) Presentation will be on how the local markets affect the stumpage prices that paid to landowners. Many landowners wonder why prices vary throughout the state and this presentation will help explain why that is the case. 12:00 - 12:50 Lunch (Provided) 12:55 - 1:55 Food Plots Speaker: Marion Barnes (Distinguished Extension Agent, Clemson Extension) Presentation will focus on food plots for Deer and Turkey. Soil management, what to plant, weed control, and various other aspects of managing food plots. 2:00 - 3:00 Herbicides in Pine Management Speaker: Dr. Stephen Peairs (Silvicultural Specialist, Clemson Extension) Presentation will be focus on herbicides used in the pine rotations through the life of the rotation. This will cover site preparation, early release, after thinning, etc. The different herbicides available for use in pine plantations will also be covered. 3:00 - 3:30 Evaluations and Door Prizes
